Have you ever wondered what happens to a person like Charles Templeton?

찰스 템플턴과 같은 사람에게 무슨 일이 일어나는지 궁금해 본 적이 있습니까?

 

Now I'd actually be shocked if you understood the name that I just said to you

because mostly he's forgotten the history but a few people still remember him.

If you have ever read Billy Graham's book Just as I am you'll become a little familiar with the man named Charles Templeton.

But half way through an evangelistic crusade Charles Templeton saw people suffering in Africa and he had a problem How could a good God allow those people to suffer?

And in that question he couldn't answer it any more and he just gave up.

He not only gave up the crusade he gave up on his faith

And he gave up ministry and he gave up following the Lord he gave up a relationship with the Lord Jesus Christ.

What happens to a person like that?

Oh the debates over these types of issues go far and wide in the Christian community because

is he a believer who has lost his salvation?

Is he a believer who had never had salvation?

So he never really was a believer he was kind of faking it until he hopefully thought he'd make it.

What in the world is going on?

How do we explain his actions?

Well the big question that Charles forces us to ask is what happens when people repent?

찰스가 우리에게 던지는 가장 큰 질문은 바로 “사람이 회개할 때 무슨 일이 일어나는가?” 입니다.

 

Now usually we think of repentance as a good thing like the word in Greek is metoyote It simply means to change direction

보통 우리는 회개를 좋은 것으로 생각합니다. 헬라어로 *메타노이아(metanoia)*는 단순히 방향을 바꾸는 것을 의미합니다.

 

but that means you could change direction from good to bad just as much as from bad to good.

So what happens when we change our direction?

What happens when we repent when we stop going the direction that we're headed and we turn and we start moving the other way?

우리가 가던 길에서 멈추어 방향을 돌이켜 다른 길로 갈 때, 즉 회개할 때 무슨 일이 일어나는 걸까요?

 

Well God explains what happens to us in Zikl Eighteen twenty one through thirty two

하나님께서는 에스겔 18장 21절부터 32절 말씀에서 우리가 어떻게 되는지를 설명해 주십니다.

 

 

 

A New Heart and Spirit

 

 

 

Ezekiel Chapter Eighteen verses twenty one to thirty two.

에스겔 18장 21절부터 32절까지입니다.

21. But if a wicked person turns away from all the sins they have committed and keeps all my decrees and does what is just and right, that person will surely live; they will not die. 악인이 그가 행한 모든 죄에서 돌이켜 내 모든 규례를 지키고 공의와 정의를 행하면, 반드시 살 것이요, 죽지 아니하리라. 22. None of the offenses they have committed will be remembered against them. Because of the righteous things they have done, they will live. 그들이 범한 죄악은 결코 기억되지 아니할 것이요, 그들이 행한 의로운 일로 말미암아 살리라. 23. Do I take any pleasure in the death of the wicked? declares the Sovereign LORD. Rather, am I not pleased when they turn from their ways and live? 내가 악인이 죽는 것을 기뻐하랴? 이는 만군의 주 여호와의 말씀이니라. 오히려 그들이 그 길에서 돌이켜 살기를 원하지 아니하랴? 24. But if a righteous person turns from their righteousness and commits sin and does the same detestable things the wicked person does, will they live? None of the righteous things that person has done will be remembered. Because of the unfaithfulness they are guilty of and because of the sins they have committed, they will die. 그러나 의인이 그의 의에서 돌이켜 죄를 범하며 악인이 행하는 가증한 일을 다 한다면, 그가 살겠느냐? 그가 행한 의로운 일은 하나도 기억되지 않을 것이요, 그가 진 불신앙과 죄로 인하여 그가 반드시 죽으리라. 25. Yet you say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Hear, you Israelites: Is my way unjust? Is it not your ways that are unjust? 그런데 너희는 “주의 길이 공의하지 않다”고 말한다. 이스라엘 족속아, 들으라. 나의 길이 공의하지 아니하냐? 오히려 너희의 길이 공의하지 아니하냐? 26. If a righteous person turns from their righteousness and commits sin, they will die for it; because of the sin they have committed they will die. 의인이 그의 의에서 돌이켜 죄를 범하면, 그가 지은 죄로 인하여 반드시 죽으리라. 27. But if a wicked person turns away from the wickedness they have committed and does what is just and right, they will save their life. 그러나 악인이 그가 행한 악에서 돌이켜 공의와 정의를 행하면, 그는 자기 생명을 건지리라. 28. Because they consider all the offenses they have committed and turn away from them, that person will surely live; they will not die. 그가 범한 모든 죄악을 깊이 돌아보고 그것들로부터 떠났으므로, 반드시 살 것이요, 죽지 아니하리라. 29. Yet the Israelites say, ‘The way of the Lord is not just.’ Are my ways unjust, people of Israel? Is it not your ways that are unjust? 그런데 이스라엘 자손은 “여호와의 길이 공의하지 않다”고 말한다. 이스라엘 족속아, 나의 길이 공의하지 아니하냐? 오히려 너희의 길이 공의하지 아니하냐? 30. Therefore, you Israelites, I will judge each of you according to your own ways, declares the Sovereign LORD. Repent! Turn away from all your offenses; then sin will not be your downfall. 그러므로 이스라엘 족속아, 내가 너희 각 사람을 그의 행위대로 심판하리니, 여호와의 말씀이니라. 회개하라! 너희 모든 죄악에서 떠나라! 그리하면 죄악이 너희를 넘어뜨리지 못하리라. 31. Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart and a new spirit. Why will you die, people of Israel? 너희가 범한 모든 죄악을 버리고, 새 마음과 새 영을 얻으라. 이스라엘 족속아, 너희가 어찌하여 죽고자 하느냐? 32. For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign LORD. Repent and live! 내가 누구든지 죽는 것을 기뻐하지 아니하노라, 만군의 주 여호와의 말씀이니라. 그러므로 회개하고 살아라!

 

 

 

So what happens when people repent?

그렇다면 사람이 회개할 때 무슨 일이 일어날까요?

 

Well Azikil seems to tell us that your direction will reveal your master and your master will reveal your destination.

에스겔은 이렇게 말합니다. 당신이 가는 방향이 당신의 주인을 드러내고, 그 주인이 결국 당신의 목적지를 드러낸다고요.

 

This is almost exactly parallel to what God says through the Apostle Paul in the Book of Romans Chapter six which we'll cover next month

이것은 사도 바울을 통해 로마서 6장에서 하나님께서 말씀하신 것과 거의 동일합니다. (이 부분은 다음 달에 다룰 예정입니다.)

 

You see in this understanding when we repent and do the right thing we turn from bad to good God gives us life

but it also means that when we change from good to bad God brings us death.

즉, 우리가 회개하여 옳은 일을 행하면 나쁜 길에서 좋은 길로 돌이키게 되고 하나님께서 생명을 주십니다. 그러나 반대로 좋은 길에서 나쁜 길로 바뀐다면 하나님은 죽음을 가져오십니다.

 

How do I say that?

Well Ezekiel 18:22 says it this way that none of the offenses that they've committed will be remembered against them because of the righteous things that they have done they will live.

무슨 뜻이냐 하면, 에스겔 18장 22절은 이렇게 말합니다. 그들이 범한 죄는 하나도 기억되지 않고, 그들이 행한 의로운 일 때문에 그들이 살리라.

 

What is Zikle is saying is if I am going the wrong direction and I change and I start going the right direction well then those things that I did in the past are not going to be remembered.

에스겔이 말하는 바는 이렇습니다. 내가 잘못된 길을 가다가 방향을 바꾸어 올바른 길을 가기 시작하면, 과거에 했던 잘못들은 기억되지 않는다는 것입니다.

 

But then that not only happens in terms of going from bad to good but Iszikil also talks about this in terms of going from good to bad.

그러나 이것은 단지 나쁜 길에서 좋은 길로 바뀌는 것만이 아닙니다. 에스겔은 또한 좋은 길에서 나쁜 길로 가는 경우도 이야기합니다.

 

Look at what he says in verse 24 at the end of 24 none of the righteous things that a person has done will be remembered because of the unfaithfulness they are guilty of and because of the sins that they have committed they will die.

24절 끝을 보십시오. 사람이 행한 의로운 일은 하나도 기억되지 않고, 그가 지은 불의와 죄 때문에 그는 죽으리라고 합니다.

 

See you might think that God is not just if he does this in fact the children of Israel argued about that in verse twenty five through twenty nine and God says hey that's not my problem that's a you problem.

이런 말씀을 보면 하나님이 불공평하다고 생각할 수 있습니다. 실제로 이스라엘 자손도 25절부터 29절에서 그렇게 따졌습니다. 그러나 하나님께서는 말씀하시길, 그것은 나의 문제가 아니라 너희의 문제라고 하십니다.

 

If someone is doing what's right and then they change and start sinning it is not just that I want to see death but I must punish sin.

만일 누군가 옳은 일을 하다가 죄를 짓기 시작하면, 하나님이 단순히 죽음을 보고 싶어서 그렇게 하는 것이 아니라, 죄는 반드시 벌을 받아야 하기 때문입니다.

 

And the reason why he must punish sin is so that in verse 30 to 32 he can give us that call to repent.

하나님이 죄를 반드시 심판하셔야 하는 이유는, 30절부터 32절에서 우리에게 회개의 부르심을 주시기 위함입니다.

 

The whole point of this passage is to allow us to note that we at any moment can change

at any moment we can stop the direction that we are heading and move a different direction

이 말씀 전체의 요점은 이것입니다. 우리는 언제든지 방향을 바꿀 수 있다는 것입니다. 언제든지 우리가 가던 길을 멈추고 다른 방향으로 나아갈 수 있습니다.

 

which means we if we are a believer and walking in the ways of the Lord must remain vigilant because we can repent and go back in the sin.

이것은 우리가 신자라 하더라도 늘 깨어 있어야 한다는 의미입니다. 왜냐하면 회개하고도 다시 죄로 돌아갈 수 있기 때문입니다.

 

Or it means that if we are walking in sin it is never too late we can repent and start doing what the Lord has called us to do obeying his commands and that will bring to us life.

또한 우리가 지금 죄 가운데 걷고 있다 하더라도 절대 늦지 않았습니다. 언제든 회개하고, 하나님께서 부르신 일을 시작하며 그분의 명령을 지킬 수 있고, 그것이 우리에게 생명을 가져옵니다.

 

 

 

 

And sort of the best ways to explain how that direction works at all places at all times is that parable of the particle Sun?

이 방향 전환이 언제 어디서나 어떻게 적용되는지를 가장 잘 설명해 주는 예는 바로 탕자의 비유입니다.

 

Remember the prodcal son has the son going to his father and basically saying I wish you were dead Dad

I want your money now I don't want to wait until you die I want my inheritance.

탕자는 아버지에게 가서 사실상 이렇게 말합니다. “아버지, 저는 아버지가 살아계신 것보다 돌아가신 것처럼 생각합니다. 유산을 지금 주십시오. 아버지가 돌아가실 때까지 기다리고 싶지 않습니다.”

 

Now he is no matter what he did before he is now choosing to change from being with the father to now being away from the father.

그는 과거에 무엇을 했든 상관없이, 아버지와 함께 있던 자리에서 떠나 아버지로부터 멀어지는 길을 선택했습니다.

 

He demands his inheritance and the father says okay

그는 자신의 유산을 요구했고, 아버지는 허락하셨습니다.

 

and so he walks at that point in death in separation from his family

but even at his lowest moment eating and sleeping with the pigs

he can repent he can wake up and go back to the father and what does the father do?

그 순간 그는 가족과의 단절 속에서 죽음의 길을 걷기 시작했습니다.

그러나 돼지와 함께 먹고 자는 가장 낮은 순간에도 그는 회개할 수 있었고, 정신을 차려 아버지께 돌아갈 수 있었습니다.

그렇다면 아버지는 어떻게 하셨을까요?

 

He embraces him and he welcomes us back as a son saying my son was dead but now he is alive. Let us rejoice together.

아버지는 그를 끌어안고 아들로서 다시 맞아 주셨습니다. “내 아들은 죽었다가 다시 살아났다. 우리가 함께 즐거워하자.”

 

At any moment we can change and at that moment it will show us what our master truly is.

우리는 언제든지 변화할 수 있으며, 그 순간 우리의 진정한 주인이 누구인지를 드러내게 됩니다.

 

If we change from bad to good then our master is God and that leads to life.

우리가 나쁜 길에서 좋은 길로 바꾸면 우리의 주인은 하나님이시며, 그것은 생명으로 이어집니다.

 

If it changes from good to bad then our master's sin and that always leads to death.

반대로 좋은 길에서 나쁜 길로 바뀐다면 우리의 주인은 죄가 되며, 그것은 언제나 죽음으로 이어집니다.

 

Now you might say Does this mean that a person could lose their salvation?

여기서 질문이 생길 수 있습니다. “그렇다면 사람이 구원을 잃을 수도 있다는 뜻입니까?”

 

And my answer is I wouldn't go that far.

제 대답은, 그 정도까지는 가지 않겠습니다.

 

You have verses in in Like John 10 27 through 29 where God says that nothing can take us out of his love nothing can remove us from his hand or from the father's hand.

요한복음 10장 27절부터 29절에 말씀하기를, 하나님의 사랑에서 우리를 빼앗을 수 있는 것은 없으며, 아무도 우리를 주님의 손이나 아버지의 손에서 빼낼 수 없다고 하십니다.

 

In thirty eight and thirty nine that says that nothing can separate us from the love of God

또한 로마서 8장 38~39절은 우리를 하나님의 사랑에서 끊을 수 있는 것은 아무것도 없다고 말합니다.

 

So I don't think we necessarily lose our salvation but I can tell you this

that if you change from walking in righteousness to walking in sin John and Paul both talk about something called a sin unto death

따라서 우리가 반드시 구원을 잃는다고 생각하지는 않습니다. 그러나 분명히 말씀드릴 수 있는 것은, 우리가 의로운 삶에서 죄의 길로 돌아간다면, 요한과 바울이 말한 “사망에 이르는 죄”라는 것이 있다는 사실입니다.

 

you might not lose your eternal salvation but your sin can result in losing your life.

당신이 영원한 구원을 잃지는 않을지라도, 죄로 인해 생명을 잃을 수는 있습니다.

 

Sin always brings death it always brings a heavy consequence whether it's eternal or temporal.

죄는 항상 죽음을 가져옵니다. 그것은 영원하든 일시적이든 무거운 결과를 반드시 가져옵니다.

 

 

 

 

So what do you want your life to be?

그렇다면 여러분의 인생이 어떤 삶이 되기를 원하십니까?

 

If you want that righteousness and blessing from God

then we must repent from sin to life and walk in that newness of life.

만약 하나님의 의와 축복을 원한다면, 우리는 죄에서 떠나 생명으로 회개하고 새로운 생명의 삶을 걸어가야 합니다.

 

If we don't and we decide to walk in sin

then our consequence could be eternal separation from God.

그렇지 않고 죄 가운데 걷기를 선택한다면, 그 결과는 하나님과의 영원한 분리일 수 있습니다.

 

Or if we're a believer that we will eventually die in our sin and probably have a whole lot of tears to be wiped away by the Lord Jesus Christ when we see him in heaven

혹은 우리가 신자라 하더라도 결국 죄 가운데 죽게 될 수 있으며, 하늘에서 주 예수 그리스도를 뵐 때 많은 눈물이 닦여져야 할지도 모릅니다.

 

when we realized just how much our life was wasted.

우리가 얼마나 인생을 허비했는지를 깨닫게 될 때 말입니다.

 

So please understand verses thirty to thirty two and receive God's call to repent.

그러므로 에스겔 18장 30절에서 32절 말씀을 깊이 이해하고, 하나님의 회개의 부르심을 받아들이시기 바랍니다.

 

 

When have you repented of your sins and sought God for a new heart and spirit?

The beauty of this passage is that we can always repent.

이 말씀의 아름다움은 우리가 언제든지 회개할 수 있다는 것입니다.

 

It is never too late even if God were to send some form of like clear indication to us that we were eventually going to die like cancer or like a stroke or something that we know is just going to progressively get worse until our death

설령 하나님께서 암이나 중풍 같은, 결국 죽음으로 이어질 것이 분명한 질병을 통해 죽음을 예고하신다 해도, 여전히 늦지 않았습니다.

 

It is still possible for us to repent

and so please let us take that opportunity now before it's too late to change and walk in the newness of life that God is calling us to.

우리는 여전히 회개할 수 있으며, 그러므로 늦기 전에 지금 그 기회를 붙잡아 변화하고 하나님께서 우리를 부르시는 새 생명의 길을 걸어가야 합니다.

 

Let us pray

기도합시다.

 

Lord, may we never change and move towards sin but may we always move in that direction of forgiveness and eternal life?
주님, 우리가 죄로 향해 가지 않고, 언제나 용서와 영생을 향해 나아가게 하옵소서.
Lord, may we repent of our sin and may we see you as a holy, just and good and loving and forgiving God so that we can boldly come to you and say we've sinned and we need your forgiveness we don't deserve it.
주님, 우리가 죄를 회개하며, 거룩하시고, 의로우시며, 선하시고, 사랑 많으시고, 용서하시는 하나님을 보게 하소서. 그래서 담대히 주님께 나아가 “우리가 죄를 지었으니 용서가 필요합니다. 우리는 자격이 없습니다”라고 고백하게 하옵소서.

It is by your grace that not only we have been saved from sin and death but it's by your grace we are being saved to walk in that newness of life you're calling us to.
우리가 죄와 사망에서 구원받은 것도 은혜요, 주님이 부르시는 새 생명의 삶을 걸어가고 있는 것도 은혜입니다.

So Lord, may we walk in the newness of life that you want to give us as efficians.
그러므로 주님, 우리가 주님이 주시려는 새 생명의 길을 걷게 하옵소서.

Two ten says that we are to do the good works that you have preordained for us in order to demonstrate how wonderful, how awesome our God is.
에베소서 2장 10절 말씀처럼, 우리가 하나님의 선하신 일을 행하며, 하나님께서 얼마나 놀라운 분이신지를 드러내게 하옵소서.

So Lord, may we change whatever it is that we need to change and walk with you our precious god, our continual saviour in Jesus' name amen.
그러므로 주님, 우리가 변화해야 할 모든 것을 변화하게 하시고, 우리의 존귀한 하나님, 영원한 구주와 함께 걷게 하옵소서. 예수님의 이름으로 기도드립니다. 아멘.
