Promise of Peace (Joshua 21:27-45) Living Life 12/20/2025 Daily Devotional Bible Study
Introduction: Rest Beyond Vacation
Welcome to living life. It's a holiday season and a lot of people are traveling and I'm sure you heard about this story um you know vacation means it's supposed to be leaving something from previously occupied things.
But the way some people are traveling nowadays is that their traveling schedule is so packed with things to do that they are more beasier with things to do than actually taking a break from them.
So after taking a vacation they come home and say ah home is the most comfortable place and they regret going on a vacation and they go on a vacation again and God wants us to take a rest and he gives us Sebbath and sebbath means to seize or to rest and God commands us to observe Sabbath to take a break from labor for spiritual resuration to be connected with God.
And as we read today's verses I would like you to think about meaning of a Sabbath.
What is God's intention of doing things that he did in today's scripture?
Let's read together

Scripture Reading: Joshua 21:27–45
Joshua Chapter 21 verses 27 to 45.
The Levite clans of the Gertenites were given from the half tribe of Massa Glon and Bin a city of refuge for one accused of murder and Be Estera together with their pasture lands two towns from the tribe of Isacar Kishen Dabarath Jarmouth and Anganum together with their pasture lands four towns from the tribe of Asher Michel Abdon Helcath and Rihab together with their pasture lands four towns from the tribes of Naftelli Kadesh in Galilee
a city of refuge for one accused of murder Hammoth Door and Carton together with their pasture lands three towns The total number of towns of the Gurchenite clans came to 13 together with their pasture lands the Merrorite clans The rest of the Levites were given from the tribe of Zebulin Joknim Carta Dimna and Nahalal together with their pasturelands four towns from the tribe of Ruben Bezar Jahas
Ketamoth and Mapithe together with their pasture lands four towns from the tribe of Gad Ramoth and Gilead a city of refuge for one accused of murder Mahanim Heshebon and Jazer together with their pasture lands four towns in all the total number of towns allotted to the Merrorite clans who were the rest of the Levites came to 12 the towns of the Levites in the territory held by the Israelites were 48 in all together with their pasture lands
each of these towns had pasture land surrounding it.
This was true for all these towns.
So the Lord gave Israel all the land he had sworn to give their ancestors and they took possession of it and settled there.
The Lord gave them rest on every side just as he had sworn to their ancestors not one of their enemies withstood them.
The Lord gave all their enemies into their hands not one of all.
The Lord's good promises to Israel failed everyone was fulfilled.
God’s Sovereign Decisions and Casting Lots
In verse 40 it says lots were elted by God and lot is goral in Hebrew language and it refers to a physical object such as a stone stick marked piece thrown to make a decision.
It is like casting dyes but with prayer and trusting God.
This method was used to assign land or choose leaders to determine responsibility and discern God's will.
And this is a God instituted decision method.
So if a person can have a favoritism towards a particular group
or um they have um like certain um like favoritism over a group of um one group over the other or if um they want to avoid having um like someone manipulate a result.
So this practice was used to have put God as a true decision maker.
And another reason for this method was used was to teach Israel that God is the one who has a sovereignty over our decision.
This was important because God wants to protect his servants.
By doing this God is protecting his people and his faithful leaders.
It prevents people from competition and like having ownership over their ministry and God works through this faithful obedient servants to do his will.
Rest as the Presence of God’s Victory
And also in verse forty four it says the Lord gave them rest on every side just as he had sworn to their fathers not one of all not one but all of their enemies had withstood them and God had given all the enemies into their hands and the battle was not over they still had battles but they no longer had to live in it.
The true rest is not the absence of word it is the presence of God's victory.
Again the rest is not the absence of word but it is the presence of God's victory.
And when you feel like you are in the darkness that's when the light is the brightest.
And if we have constant fear and displacement can we say we are in peace?
We live in a broken sinful world and people pray for a perfect world world condition where there is no accident, no death and no sickness.
Sabbath, Faith, and True Peace
We'll have that when we go to heaven but if we have faith in God through Jesus Christ and what he did for us we can find the true rest and leave a victorious life even in this broken world.
That is why God commands us to observe.
Seventh and it is not just a day doing nothing it is an intentional day to take a break from everything else and seeking the presence of God.
And God truly wants us to take a break from survival mode and find the rest in him.
Fulfillment of Every Promise
In verse forty five it says not one word of all the good promises that the Lord had made to the house of Israel had failed.
All came to pass and God's promises are absolute and this verse was placed right after the Levite's land distribution.
So what are the three elements that are necessary in order to establish the nation?
They need people land and laws and through Moses got allotted lenge to the Levites.
The land is settled
by taking care of the Levites worship is secured and the leadership is established.
God is forming his body of Christ his church here on this Earth those are the people that we have.
The covenant is fulfilled.
God’s Presence, Provision, and Sovereignty
Now the Gods scattered his servants to saturate the land with his presence and God provides for those who serve him and God assigns by law to declare his sovereignty.
And today's passage reveals so much of God's characters and God appoints his people
God takes care of his people and God provides for his faithful servants and God fulfills his promises.
And this shows how much God is involved in our lives and how much God loves us.
He gave us the land, his people and the laws to follow that we can have heaven on this Earth if we are in under in his presence

there is no coincidence in God's work.
Everything happens for a reason according to God's plan.
And knowing that that God's sovereignty in our lives it gives us hope and comfort.
Dwelling in God’s Presence
His plan is not just bad plan and just but as we just saw like his detailed instructions his plans are perfect and better than what we can even imagine or what we can even wish for.
All we need to do is to trust his sovereignty and be part of his amazing plans.
And when we depend on him and we can dwell on his presence and be in his peace regardless of our struggles, our environment or conditions or challenges in our lives.
And in the introduction I mentioned how people say that their home is the most comfortable place.
It is true when we dwell in God's presence that is when we find when we can find a true peace, true rest and true joy in God.
Closing Prayer
And I pray that all of us come to God with a humble heart
and surrender ourselves and invite the Holy spirit so he can lead us to the right path and have the sovereign authority over our lives.
And as we are celebrating, celebrating the holiday season, let's continue to invite the Holy spirit into our lives.
Let's pray Heavenly Father we are so grateful for your steadfast love for us and thank you for giving us that true peace and true victory and the victory that you already won for us.
Um Lord, could you please continue to help us Tom claim that victory in our lives Lord, can you please help us to find that true peace and joy in you?
Lord, could you please continue to minister us and guide us and protect us so that we can find the presence of your victory in everything that we do We thank you for the 7th We thank you for allowing us to have that peace in you and we prayed all this in your son's name.
Amen.
