Righteous Before God (Romans 2:1-16) Living Life 09/04/2025 Daily Devotional Bible Study

Introduction

Welcome to living life.

You know during this devotional I'm about to confess something and so forgive me brothers and sisters but the other day I actually ran a red light I'm ashamed to admit that and in my defense I ran the red light because I was late to an appointment and with that particular person I did not want to be late again.
And what made it even more harrowing was that when I ran the red light there was actually a police car making a left turn into where I was going

and I thought for sure I've got a ticket.
Now this is this is it right here he's going to get me but you know what I did not get a ticket and the police officer went his way and I thought you know I got away with one Yeah you know this must be God's favor on me.
He did not want me to get a ticket.
When I went home that day I started to think to myself you know maybe I should have gotten a ticket I should have been punished for breaking the law.

This is what Paul gets to in today's verse as he talks about the Romans and he is delivering his polemical against the Jews.
Did we get away with it?

Do you have a right that somehow you get to get away with it?
How far will God let us go sinning stumbling along her way?
Let's think about this as we read today's passage.
Let's read

Scripture Reading (Romans 2:1–16)

Romans Chapter two verses one to sixteen.

You therefore have no excuse you who pass judgment on someone else for at whatever point you judge another you are condemning yourself because you who pass judgment do the same things.
Now we know that God's judgment against those who do such things is based on truth.
So when you a mere human being pass judgment on them and yet do the same things do you think you will escape God's judgment

or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness Forbearance and patience not realizing that God's kindness is intended to lead you to repentance but because of your stubbornness and your unrepentant heart you are storing up wrath against yourself.
For the day of God's wrath when his righteous judgment will be revealed God will repay each person according to what they have done.
To those who by persistence in doing good seek glory honor and immortality

he will give eternal life.
But for those who are self seeking and who reject the truth and follow evil there will be wrath and anger there will be trouble and distress for every human being who does evil first for the Jew then for the gentile but glory honor and peace for everyone who does good first for the Jew then for the gentile For God does not show favoritism All who sin apart from the law will also perish apart from the law and all who sin under the law will be judged by the law

for it is not those who hear the law who are righteous in God's sight but it is those who obey the law who will be declared righteous.
Indeed when gentiles who do not have the law do by nature things required by the law they are a law for themselves even though they do not have the law they show that the requirements of the law are written on their hearts their consciences also bearing witness and their thoughts sometimes accusing them and at other times even defending them.

This will take place on the day when God judges people's secrets through Jesus Christ as my Gospel declares

Commentary and Application

You know there's a lot of dissension in the Christian community about what is a calling How does God draw you to him?
What exactly does it mean to be regenerated?
You see God is in control and God does draw us to him.
But when he draws us to and when he regenerates us from our sin and brings us back to life we are called to respond.
But often what happens is we don't respond and we turn away from God and there are many Bible verses that attest to characters in the Bible turning away from God

Jona He tried to run away from his calling and when we do sometimes the wrath of God and maybe his punishment or his it doesn't come to us immediately and we think to ourselves You know we've gotten away right and we often think this as well that somehow God's favor is upon us that is why we're able to get away with this right This is the path that God has chosen for us that's why there are no consequences.
And

another thing is this we often believe that even if we are stricken by our conscience that the Holy spirit puts in our heart that there's enough time to turn back I'm going to do this for a little bit.
This is something that I have to do.
I cannot stop this immediately in time I will turn back but brothers and sisters I'm here to tell you anything in life that is meaningful.
There is no time to do those things.

We have to make time for our family our friends The things that are meaningful to us and that are important we have to make time for those things and in life there is something that's much more important than your job than your family anything and that is for us to repent and turn back to God.
Because if we don't do this if we don't repent right now and turn back to God we will have to suffer the consequences of our sin.

You know Paul states in today's verse that there will be wrath and fury and distress and tribulation for those who do not obey righteousness.
And this is a twofold issue when it comes to dealing with consequences.
First off our moral failings will cause destruction in this life.
You see moral failings is a little bit different than simply breaking the rules transgressing the laws.
Laws are designed to protect our property.
I have my house You cannot break into my house You cannot steal my car

but the thing about breaking the law is this we can usually pay and it can be corrected in rare instances I talked about running a red light before right?
If somehow somebody were to die because you broke the law Yeah there's no way you can make up for that but for the most part when it comes to the law we can make up for that.
When it comes to our moral transgressions we become damaged spiritually and the consequences are far more dire

PTSD generational trauma passing down of sin generation after generation unexplainable self destructive behavior The gravest consequences is not even this not even just the psychological damage.
The gravest consequences is how will we answer to God When we get to the heavenly course we will be judged.
My friends when we get to Heaven we often talk about salvation as the only goal in life and yes

salvation is faith in Christ but we will be judged according to our works.
Scriptures talks extensively about that but here is where our response comes into play.
Do we want to take our chances before God entrusts our own works or do we want to put our faith in Jesus Christ who was our lord and savior?
You know the consequences of our actions in this life we have to deal with them but the more serious consequences of our sinfulness is this How do we answer to God?

Our righteousness before God does not come with our actions.
Our righteousness comes with our faith in Christ.
Let us answer God's calling to repent to turn from our sinfulness now

not later not one year from now

now so that we may be righteous before God.

When do you feel superior to other people?
When do you feel superior to other people?

Brothers and sisters We could not be righteous before God even if we tried

we can only imitate God's righteousness by trying to obey the laws that we have set forth for ourselves.
But let us put our faith in Christ his blood that saves us his work on the cross that atones for our sins.
Let us put our faith in what he has done so that when we go before God when we repent today and in the Heavenly court when this life is over we go before God that he may accept us

impute his righteousness to us and we may be in his family for all of eternity.

Closing Prayer

Let's pray Heavenly Father We are so grateful for what you have done for us.
Father We are so grateful for our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ your son Father and we are so grateful for the Holy Spirit that gives us power to turn from sin and repent and turn to you.
Father the Holy Triune God who is working to redeem us from our sinfulness to attone for our sins.

Father we are so grateful Give us a heart to serve you to become sanctified to become more holy to be set apart from this world Father and to trust only in our Lord and saviour Jesus Christ who died on the cross for our sins Father so that he could give us eternal life We are so grateful for his works We pray all of this in your son's name Amen.
