A Chosen Foolishness (Romans 1:18-32) Living Life 09/03/2025 Daily Devotional Bible Study
1. Intro
Hello everyone, welcome to Living Life.
Some say life is full of choices.
Well, you made a lot of choices today, probably in the morning.
Maybe I should sleep in more or maybe I should wake up early in the morning.
That's a choice that you made today morning, right?
And maybe you made a choice of, oh, what should I wear?
What kind of breakfast should I have?
Well, our life is full of choices. Some say life is like a sea between B and D.
What that means, life is choices between B, birth, D, death.
Well, God has given us a free will that we may choose.
And some may choose, some make some good choices, some may make some bad choices.
But for today's passage in the Apostle, in the Book of Romans, Apostle Paul gives lots of examples of making bad choices.
Let's go to the Bible and read it.

2. Scripture Reading (Romans 1:18–32)
Romans chapter 1 verses 18 to 32
The wrath of God is being revealed from heaven against all the godlessness and wickedness of people who suppress the truth by their wickedness, since what may be known about God is plain to them, because God has made it plain to them. For since the creation of the world, God's invisible qualities, His eternal power and divine nature have been clearly seen being understood from what has been made, so that people are without excuse, For although they knew God, they neither glorified Him as God nor gave thanks to Him, but their thinking became futile and their foolish hearts were darkened.
Although they claimed to be wise, they became fools and exchanged the glory of the immortal God for images made to look like a mortal human being and birds and animals and reptiles. Therefore, God gave them over in the sinful desires of their hearts to sexual impurity for the degrading of their bodies with one another. They exchanged the truth about God for a lie and worshipped and served created things rather than the Creator who is forever praised. Because of this, God gave them over to shameful lusts. Even their women exchanged natural sexual relations for unnatural ones. In the same way, the men also abandoned natural relations with women and were inflamed with lust for one another.
men committed shameful acts with other men and received in themselves the due penalty for their error. Furthermore, just as they did not think it worthwhile to retain the knowledge of God, so God gave them over to a depraved mind so that they do what ought not to be done. They have become filled with every kind of wickedness, evil, greed, and depravity. They are full of envy, murder, strife, deceit, and malice. They are gossips. slanderers, God -haters, insolent, arrogant, and boastful. They invent ways of doing evil. They disobey their parents. They have no understanding, no fidelity, no love, no mercy.
Although they know God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve death, They not only continue to do these very things, but also approve of those who practice them.
3. Commentary and Application
Well, we find sudden change of his wording as we hit verse 18. Well, from verse all day till 17, Apostle Paul encourages and is happy. It's like an introduction, saying, Hi, I'm so happy to see you.
But hey, this is the real thing that Apostle Paul talks about. And he starts his message in a somewhat of a dark area.
In verse 18, he goes on and saying that we are all wicked.
God has revealed to us naturally as we see, if you look around the world, just look at the nature, and you will be able to see that the existence of God that you cannot deny.
And it says, you cannot make an excuse saying, Hey, God does not exist. I'm not going to believe in God. Because if you look at the nature, and you will be in awe of how Amazing, the power of God has been displayed just through the nature. One time I watched a video of a Chinese eye doctor who was raised in China. And because he was raised in China, he was an atheist.
And as he was studying about the eye, because he had to be the doctor, and he was studying about the eye and he found out there's billions and billions of neurons connecting together to work together to actually see. And that small eye, he found that there's so many things were happening and he came to realize that existence of God that he could not deny.
So later on, he accepted that God is living God and amazing God and later on he accepted Jesus Christ as Lord and he became a Christian.
And he tells the video, as you study more about the science of nature, it is so powerful that you cannot deny the existence of God.
Just like that, Apostle Paul is saying, You cannot deny the existence of God and His Almighty -ness.
But even though they saw the proof, they chose not to believe in God.
They chose to reject God.
And they chose to put God away from their hearts, says in verse 28.
And also later on in verse 29, it says, And then in 30, sorry, they become God haters.
They start to decide to hate God.
And then moreover, he lists the things of sin and the bad choices they made. In fact, he lists 23 of them, such as sexual immorality, the strife and deceit and malice and gossip and slandering and envy and all this stuff.
And if you look at those lists, And some of them are pretty serious things like murder or sexual immorality.
But some of them are pretty subtle if you look at it such as envy. You know, gossip.
But we know from the Bible, and Jesus teaches the same thing, in the perspective of God, in the view of God, whether it's a big sin or a small sin, there's no such thing as big sin or a small sin.
He just calls it a sin. Like in Matthew chapter 5, Jesus says, if you hate a person, then you already committed a murder.
If you have a lustful heart, then you already committed the adulterous relationship.
So what's important is when we have a choice, as we make the choices every single second, every single moment, let us make the right choice.
And how can we do that?
Let's go to the Proverbs of chapter 4 23, it says, Guard your heart.
That's where the living water of life springs through.
So let us guard our hearts and make a smart choice, good choice, that we will be the person to glorify God.

As Apostle Paul, writing down the list of sins, the last two sins that he writes is this Lack of mercy and lack of love. As we find in verse 31 Well, lack of love and lack of mercy can be very serious sin.
Just like in 1 Corinthians 13, love is the most important thing for us.
And actually love is the reason why that God sent Jesus Christ for us that we will be saved and we will be forgiven.
And Jesus reminds us, we should love the Lord with all our hearts and all our minds and all our souls.
And just as it is, that we should love our neighbor, we should show our mercy to others.
Let us be reminded of this once again, that today we will make a choice to love God and love others and show mercy to others.
4. Closing Prayer
let's pray. father God, Lord, we thank you, lord jesus. and lord, we confess and we repent of the choices that we make, which was not right for you, Lord, in front of your eyes. lord, we repent of our bad choices, Lord. Lord, with the blood of Jesus Christ, would you forgive us?
Lord, once again, we hold on to the cross, Lord. we hold on to the gospel of Jesus Christ, where you died on the cross for us, that you have forgiven all our sins, lord jesus. lord, holy spirit, would you help us to make right choice today.
lord, Holy Spirit, would you help us to love you more and love others as how Jesus reminded us to do so.
lord, we thank you. we love you, Lord. in Jesus' name we pray.
