Divinely Sustained (John 6:60-71)

Welcome to living life

Jesus performed the miracle of feeding the 5 thousand with five loaves of bread and two fish.

After this many people eagerly volunteered to become his disciples and followed him.

However

due to the teachings Jesus shared in yesterday's passage and today's almost everyone ended up living him.

Since we are reading this as a written count it might not feel as impactful but imagine for a moment

Jesus performed an incredible miracle
feeding close to 20,000 people including women and children and many began following him

Yet shortly after this event nearly all of them abandoned him leaving only the 12 disciples.

If this were to happen in our churches today how would you react?

We might think that something had gone awfully bad Perhaps we might think it as a complete failure but why does the Bible show us this story Just as it happened from our perspective

Today's passage seems like a total failure but from God's perspective it is not.

Instead it serves as a pathway to understanding the truth.

Let's explore this grecious word got together

60 On hearing it, many of his disciples said, "This is a hard teaching. Who can accept it?"

61 Aware that his disciples were grumbling about this, Jesus said to them, "Does this offend you?
62 What if you see the Son of Man ascend to where he was before!
63 The Spirit gives life; the flesh counts for nothing. The words I have spoken to you are spirit and they are life.
64 Yet there are some of you who do not believe." For Jesus had known from the beginning which of them did not believe and who would betray him.
65 He went on to say, "This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless the Father has enabled him."

66 From this time many of his disciples turned back and no longer followed him.
67 "You do not want to leave too, do you?" Jesus asked the Twelve.
68 Simon Peter answered him, "Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life.
69 We believe and know that you are the Holy One of God."
70 Then Jesus replied, "Have I not chosen you, the Twelve? Yet one of you is a devil!"

71 (He meant Judas, the son of Simon Iscariot, who, though one of the Twelve, was later to betray him.)

Jesus performed the most famous miracle

The people were amazed and began following him.

Jesus however withdrew from them eventually the people found him again

but when they did Jesus rebuked them he told them that they were following him not because they understood his message but because they were happy with the food and miracle.

Jesus said that only those drawn by God can truly come to him

which means not everyone here today will meet God.

He explained that miracles do not give a life instead he declared that they must eat his flesh and drink his blood which means they must become completely won with him to have a true life.

Hearing this the people were offended and upset eventually they left cheese

The situation can be summarized as follows.

The people who followed Jesus realized that he was not the kind of messiah they wanted.

As a result they abandoned him.

Yet in this moment God reveals an important lesson to us.

Let's take a look at Verse 63 The spirit gives life The flesh counts for nothing

the words I have spoken to you they are full of the spirit and life

Jesus's word are spirit and life but we live in the flesh as we listen to his word.

The flesh however is fundamentally tied to death it contains desires laziness envy jealousy anger lies

and greed and that's why following to God's word is not easy

We often want sermons to be entertaining to hold our attention

We attended worship services when there's something beneficial for us

we dedicate ourselves when we can gain recognition in church

we sing praises when the melody and lyrics stir our emotions.

This is the endless temptation we face in this post modern era while we are living in our body and God's grace is not grace because it satisfies our flesh but because it makes our body can do what we couldn't before

think about this

when King David committed the sin of adultery the prophet Nathan came to him and sharply rebuked him.

Nathan declared God's judgment on David.

By that point

David had already arranged the death of Ura killing one more prophet in the secret it's easy

Deavil was the king the highest authority in the land and he is already in the acceleration of crime

but God's grace came to David in this moment what was the grace?

Despite his position of power

David surrendered to the word of God and repented Yes after this David faced severe consequences for his sin but he was forgiven and restored.

That's the grace.

Here's another story The opposal poll suffered severe persecution while preaching the Gospel once he

was stoned so hard that people thought he was dead and dragged him out of the city

but he woke up stood up return to the city and continue preaching the Gospel.

This is grace that anything can stop that anything cannot stop

This is not something the flesh can do

the flash would field fear it would give up on God disappointed by the suffering caused while reserving God

but the grace Paul received enabled him to rise again and the result of that grace is what we see today

the spread of the gospel throughout the world.

How does the almighty God work?

He works through our body our life

through the steps through our hands and our mouth that proclaimed the Gospel.

To be part of this work we must overcome the weaknesses of our flesh and our emotions

and the word of God enables us to do just that.

God's word is given to us so that we can rise above the flesh exceed our emotions and overcome the limitations set by this world.

Jesus demonstrated this himself he endured the most intense physical suffering and finally he choose to die on the cross but God in his power raised Jesus Christ from the dead
by surrendering to the father Jesus overcame the limitations of the flesh and brought us the salvation. Therefore

we must understand this God's word may sometimes be hard to hear it may not align with our circumstances

it may even go against what we want but if it's truly God's word it brings an eternal life.

How long have you been following Christ?

God does not consult us to determine right and wrong. It's we who must go to revealed Scripture to find out what we should believe.

Heavenly Father
Sometimes we really don't want to follow you because we're living in our flesh
our emotion and our laziness. Doesn't do that
but please help us to raise raise our head to see our work
and also we need to understand what is what are you doing right now in the world
even if we don't say it doesn't matter we just want to follow you everyday.
Please give us wisdom and strength.
