Joshua's Final Words

Scripture Reading: Joshua 24:25–33

Joshua chapter 24 verses 25 to 33 On that day Joshua made a covenant for the people, and there at Shechem he reaffirmed for them decrees and laws. And Joshua recorded these things in the book of the law of God. Then he took a large stone and set it up there under the oak, near the holy place of the Lord. See, he said to all the people, this stone will be a witness against us. It has heard all the words the Lord has said to us. It will be a witness against you if you are untrue to your God. Then Joshua dismissed the people, each to their own inheritance.

After these things, Joshua son of Nun, the servant of the Lord, died at the age of a hundred and ten, and they buried him in the land of his inheritance, at Timnath -serah in the hill country of Ephraim, north of Mount Gosh. Israel served the Lord throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him, who had experienced everything the Lord had done for Israel. And Joseph's bones, which the Israelites had brought up from Egypt, were buried at Shechem in the track of land that Jacob bought for a hundred pieces of silver from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem. This became the inheritance of Josh's descendants. And Eleazar son of Aaron died and was buried at Gibeah, which had been allotted to his son Phinehas in the hill country of Ephraim.

Reflection: Joshua at the End of His Life

Just like you and I are spending the final day of year 2025, Joshua, we see him as the final time in our study in the scripture of the book of Joshua. We see him, he's about to die at the age of 110. But before he dies, he reminds the people of Israel to serve God and to follow God and choose today whom you will serve. So today he leaves us with three important key words that you and I need to hold on as we begin the final day of year 2025.

Key Word 1: Covenant

First word is in verse 25 is the word covenant. In verse 25 says, Joshua made a covenant for the people. Faith does not happen by accident. We need to make it intentional.

Today Joshua makes it final push to remind people that God made a covenant with you, the people of Israel. Today we need to do the same. We need to serve God. We need to follow God. As we look back to the year of 2025, I'm sure there are some laughters, there's some tears, there's some good news, and there's some sad news, up and downs, joys and tears. But at the end of the day, we need to say, hey, everything came from God. And God made a covenant. God promised to be with us at all times. He carried us. He provided for us. He guided us. He protected us.

Today as we begin the year and the final day of the year 2025, let's remember the providence of God, how much God has provided for us, daily basis, weekly basis, and monthly basis. In the life of Joshua, as we turn to the chapter 24, he reminds the people of Israel that God made a covenant with you when we're sinners, when we did not follow Him. Remember to follow the first step that Jesus Christ has left behind. So today, take heart, take courage that God made a covenant with you guys. And today, that brings us joy, brings us delightful life that you and I need to pursue.

Key Word 2: The Book of the Law of God

Second word comes in verse 26. the book of the law of God. The faith must be rooted in God's word.

In his final speech, in his farewell speech, Joshua reminds them not only the covenant to follow and be rooted in God's word. He's telling the people, listen and obey the words of God. This is the part of the covenant. This is the part of what it means to follow Jesus Christ. In our all life, we have been entrusted with God's word. To read it, to study it, to memorize it, to even share with the people, to teach people. Today, what brings change in the life is not different circumstance. It's not how the world will treat us. What makes the personal interchange, it is the only in the word of the Lord. Today, Joshua reminds us in a final day, it's never too late.

In our final day of year 2025, before we turn to year 2026, we need to make a decision. to follow the word of the Lord because the word of the Lord becomes the path unto my life. The word of the Lord becomes the direction that you and I need to find. Today allow the Holy Spirit, allow the word of the Lord to speak to you and to remember that God has been good all time and he's been providing the word of the Lord.

Key Word 3: The Next Generation

On today's, the final keyword that I want to look at is in verse 31. Israel served the Lord throughout the lifetime of Joshua and of the elders who outlived him and who experienced everything the Lord has done for Israel. Today, we see Joshua dying in front of us. Joshua's life ended at the 110 years old. He dies.

But what he leaves behind is the courage and the blessing to the next generation. The third keyword is the next generation. Faith must be handed over, pass it on to the next generation. We receive faith just like me, I receive my faith from my parents. The faith that I received from my parents must, it must be passed on to my children, to the next generation. Today, we see a great hero, Joshua, dying in front of us. We see a man of God who followed, who became a key figure conquering the promised land. But all men will fade away. All persons will die. It is something that we cannot escape. We see Joshua dying in front of us, but Israelites commit their life. What Joshua taught us, what Joshua showed us, what Joshua brought us, we need to do the same.

We need to pass it on to the next generation. Today, as we wrap up the year 2025, as we look toward the year 2026, let's remember we must pass on our faith, the word, the covenant to the next generation. Let's spend some time today praying for the next generation. Let's thinking about what are the ways that we could help to provide for the next generation.

Not only the things of the world, not only food, shelter, or the good education, How can I hand down my faith to the next generation?

Let's have a heart for the next generation.

Closing Prayer and Benediction

In a few hours, year 2025 will fade away. But I want to remind you, God's faithfulness and God's word remain forever. His love endures forever. His word continues to the next generation. May we take courage as we turn to the word every day next year. As we spend time in quiet time, may I encourage you guys to continue to turn to the scripture, turn to the word of the Lord for strength and direction and the hope that God has provided for us. Let us pray together. As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord. Covenant, the word of the Lord, and next generation. It is the three key words that you leave behind us today as we spend the final hours of year 2005. We thank you for your grace.

We thank you for loving us. We thank you for providing us the word of the Lord. We bless your name. We praise your name. We thank you for this opportunity to come to know you through your word. We praise you. We pray this in Jesus' name. Amen.
