God’s Love Expressed Through Actions

Welcome to living life. Friends did your parents say I love you to you when you were growing up?
If they didn't perhaps you were wondering Do my parents really care for me?
Sometimes within Asian American households there isn't there isn't a frequent expression of words of affirmation.
I'm instead parents think that they are loving us when they coach us with a truth with an observation of other weaknesses that we would do all the correct.

And sometimes when we experience this type of coaching which is somewhat critical we begin to wonder if our parents love us because we see our friends growing up with more encouraging parents who are saying many more words of infirmation and encouragement.
Our friends I think that it's really important for us to determine the nature of love as being rooted in acts.
And so what we see in today's passage is that God is saying Hey look at my actions towards you

don't they convey how much I love you and don't they inspire you to love me and obey me in the same way May you be able to remember your parents' actions and based on their actions if you can see proof of their love for you may you be able to find the piece of knowing that even when they didn't say it they didn't show it and prove it with the way they lived their life?

Remembering God’s Faithful Acts in History

Joshua Chapter 24 verses one to thirteen.

Then Joshua assembled all the tribes of Israel at Chekhum.
He summoned the elders leaders judges and officials of Israel and they presented themselves before God Joshua said to all the people this is what the Lord the God of Israel says.
Long ago your ancestors including Tarah the father of Abraham and Nahor lived beyond the Euphrates River and worshipped other gods.
But I took your father Abraham from the land beyond the Euphrates and led him throughout Canon and gave him many descendants.

I gave him Isaac and to Isaac I gave Jacob and ISA.
I assigned the hill country of Sir to Isah but Jacob and his family went down to Egypt then I sent Moses and Aaron and I afflicted the Egyptians by what I did there and I brought you out.
When I brought your people out of Egypt you came to the sea and the Ejopians pursued them with chariots and horsemen as far as the red sea

but they cried to the Lord for help and he put darkness between you and the Egyptians.
He brought the sea over them and covered them.
You saw with your own eyes what I did to the Egyptians then you lived in the wilderness for a long time.
I brought you to the land of the Amorites who lived east of the Jordan.
They fought against you but I gave them into your hands I destroyed them from before you and you took possession of their land.

When Bailac son of Zipour the king of Moab prepared to fight against Israel he sent for Bailam son of Bore to put a curse on you but I would not listen to Bailam so he blessed you again and again and I delivered you out of his hand.
Then you crossed the Jordan and came to Jericho.
The citizens of Jericho fought against you as did also the Amorites parasites Canonites Hitites Gurgachites Hivites and Jebucytes but I gave them into your hands

I sent the hornet ahead of you which drove them out before you.
Also the two Amorite kings you did not do it with your own sword and bow so I gave you a land on which you did not toil and cities you did not build and you live in them and eat from vineyards and olive groves that you did not plant

God’s Love Proven to All the People

friends. In today's passage Joshua is addressing not just the leaders of the tribes and families but he's addressing all the people.
We see this in Joshua AH Chapter 24 Verse 2 Joshua said to all the people So this is something that everyone needs to know and something that we all need to know All of us is that we are loved God loves us How do we know?
It says here that in verse four

AH to Isaac I gave Jacob and Isaw I assigned the Hell country of Sir to Isaw but to Jacob and his family but Jacob and his family went down to Egypt.
So what it's saying here is that God is saying I was faithful to your ancestors and your ancestors are the children of Jacob because these are the Israelites the children of Jacob.
And God is saying You might think that is Saul had it easier and his children he had a simpler more prosperous and secure life.

And you might think hey we had to go through Egypt we had to go through this land of slavery and so much suffering.
You might say Oh there were so many people that cursed us there were many people that fought against us along the way and all these hardships made me think God didn't love me He didn't protect me all this time but God is saying to the children of Jacob I do love you and you can tell I love you by the actions I performed for you.

God’s Deliverance in Suffering and Opposition

Yes it's true that in Egypt the Israelites suffered but it says in verse five God says I sent Moses an errand and the people who punished you I afflicted the Egyptians by what I did there and I brought you out.
You might say I was in such suffering Does God even love me?
You might look to a past time of hurt and problems and trauma and you might say Isn't this proof that God was negligent or that God didn't care?
But friends may you hear what God says to Jacob?

He says to Jacob and his children Yes you had to live through centuries in Egypt but my love for you is shown in this I brought you out of that suffering.
And so as you see looking back that Oh God did act and he brought me out May you see that his care for you is revealed in those acts?
You might also feel like God felt far when you could hear or sense that people were whispering against you when you knew that people were trying to undermine your reputation or when they were wishing ill for you

or I'm You couldn't you know just like kind of like build a case of how you were being victimized but you could just sense that people were trying to curs you.
In those times you might have felt lonely wondering God where are you?
But listen to what God says.
It's saying that here in verse 9 when Balak son of the Poor the king of Moab prepared to fight against Israel He sent for Balam son of Beor to put a curse on you.
So God is saying

There are times when you will feel the people whisper There are times when you can sense the people plotting and you know that they're trying to hurt you they're planning against you and even though you might feel that dread you should know that God will say I will interrupt their plans.
It says in verse 10 Yes He did try to curse you but I would not listen to Balam So he blessed you again and again and I delivered you out of his hand.

From Hardship to Blessing Through God’s Intervention

So God is saying Even when you feel like you weren't loved because you have to go through so many enemies kind of cursing you and talking behind your back God is saying I didn't listen to them and instead of cursing you I allowed these things to be a part of your blessing to be a part of you getting stronger and more mature.
And so friends even if you look at your past and you look and you focus on the negative

and you think because people did these things I don't think God was there.
May you hear God speaking to his people saying I am the one that stopped people from cursing you and I made it all work out to bless you It says also in Verse 11 that sometimes people aren't just whispering against you they're actively fighting you they are wrestling you to the ground and trying to rob you and take things away from you.

It says here that the citizens of Jericho in verse 11 fought against you as also did the Amarites parasites Cannonites Hitites Gurgchites Hivites and Jebocytes.
So the people of Jacob they could say God we had so many enemies so many people fought against us We had to have so many enemies surround us and it was so dangerous but God is saying I gave them into your hands.
God is saying So what happened?
Did you die? Did you become like did did what they wanted happen to you?

And God is saying No I gave them into your hands Yes you are outnumbered Yes you were scared but I was with you and I made you overcome.
Friends the Israelites they could look at their life and they could point to hardships and say because of these hardships I don't think I'm loved But God he looks at the same history and says Look at these moments of my intervention Look at what I did to bring you out of that terrible place

to make people their plans to curse You ended up blessing you and I made you able to defeat your enemies.
Isn't this proof that I love you?
As you see God's actions in these key moments may you believe that yes you are loved

A Prayer of Thanksgiving and Assurance

friends. When we believe that God loves us even though our lives were hard he's been faithful.
When you believe this, then you are developing the clarity of vision that allows you to see the moments that shine in the midst of all of the mundane moments.
And when you know what to focus on you'll also be able to say, Hey, my parents love me as well.
They loved me imperfectly and completely

but as God's grace is upon them, they did love me.
With that in mind Would you join me in the prayer of thanksgiving?
God, help us to be grateful.
Instead of counting our hardships help us to count your miracles.
Instead of calling ourselves victims help us to say we are more than conquerors because of what you have done for us.
You have given to us Jesus Christ and through faith in him, we know that all things will be made well

because of him. We can say you have intervened decisively to bless us and because of him we can say that even though it was imperfect everyone around us has been shaping us for our good And you have been using everyone to make us the people that can receive your blessings.
God help us to move into the close of this year with an assurance that we are loved and with praise and thanksgiving on our lips.
As you remember the ways you've intervened to bless us these things we pray in Jesus' name amen.
