Remembering What God Has Done and Trusting What He Will Do

Welcome to living life as we come before God's words Today May our heart pause to remember what the Lord has already done and opening face for what he will continue to do.
A few days ago I attended the retirement service of a senior pastor whom I deeply respect as a mentor as he laid it down nearly forty years of his ministry his own member came and afforded in person to honor and celebrate his retirement.

Fellow pastors and members of the congregation also shared the message of gratitude and appreciations.
As I watch it this deeply moving moment of picture wasn't planned in my heart.
I found it myself thinking when my own calling comes to an end I hope I can finish like that too.
Most of people spend a great deal of time dreaming about the thinking through the planning their beginnings.
However if we are people who have been called by God finishing well is just as important as starting well.

Finishing Well as Faithful Stewards

This is because everything we have ultimately belongs to Jesus our true owner.
And we came into this world with an empty hand and then we are called to leave as a stewards who will one day place the all and then we have a built and accomplish it back into his hand.
Today's passage records Joshua's farewell message.
As Joshua grows old and he gathered the leader of Israel and reminds them of God's faithfulness

Let us listen with our gratitude and entrust as God speaks to us through today's passage.

Scripture Reading: Joshua 23:1–10

Joshua Chapter 23 verses one to ten.

After a long time had passed and the Lord had given Israel rest from all their enemies around them Joshua by then a very old man summoned all Israel, their elders, leaders, judges and officials and said to them I am very old.
You yourselves have seen everything the Lord your God has done to all these nations for your sake.
It was the Lord your God who fought for you.

Remember how I have allotted as an inheritance for your tribes all the land of the nations that remained the nations I conquered between the Jordan and the Mediterranean Sea in the west.
The Lord your God himself will push them out for your sake.
He will drive them out before you and you will take possession of their land.
And the Lord your God promised you be very strong be careful to obey all that is written in the Book of the Law of Moses without turning aside to the right or to the left.

Do not associate with these nations that remain among you.
Do not invoke the names of their gods or swear by them.
You must not serve them or bow down to them but you are to hold fast to the Lord your God as you have.
Until now the Lord has driven out before you great and powerful nations to this day.
No one has been able to withstand you one of you routes a thousand because the Lord your God fights for you just as he promised.

Looking Back with Gratitude, Looking Forward with Confidence

As Joshua's leadership draws to a close this passage invite us to look back with gratitude and forward with a confidence.
In verse one we read after a long time they had passed and the Lord had given the Israeli rest from all their enemies around them.
This meant that after years of a Lord God in the latter battles the Lord graciously gave the Israel a season of peace and security so they could settle into the obedience and then remember that their

success came from him alone.
Josha the symbol of a victory who personally led these campaigns and faithfully served the Lord now brings the conquest of canon to its completion and the beginning.
The two reflect on the Israel's journey.
He gathers the people and reminds them of a truth that anchors the faith across the generations.
God has been faithful in the past and he will be faithful in the future.

The Lord Who Fought for Israel

Standing before Israel Joshua does not highlight their strength or milit

strategy. Instead he points directly to the Lord's hands in verse 3 and he says you yourselves have seen everything the Lord your God has done to all these nations for your sake.
It was the Lord your God who fought for you and their victory land and unrest were not accidents or the human achievements they were the result of God's promising keeping power, keeping the promise.
This is called to remember even Joshua's name which means the Lord

saves testifies that God he himself is the reason.
Israel overcame the hardships and then prevailed in the battle.

Holding Fast to the Faithful God

Jahua then turned Israel's gaze forward.
The same God who delivered them will continues to drive out the remaining nations.
The words rest does not mean that Israel would face no challenges anymore though there were no immediate threats and they were still surrounded by the potential enemies.
Joshua confidence is not the optimism it is rooted in the knowing God.

Because the God has been faithful Israel can move forward courageously obediently and without fear and because of a crisis of victory we too are counted as the victors.
Our future victories are possibly because of our God continues to fight for us.
Joshua then appeals to Israel's reason.
In verse 10 he asked them to consider how one Israeli soldier could route a thousand enemies.

One of you routes a thousand because of the Lord your God fights for you just as he promised.
How could this be possible if God were not fighting for them?
Josha called the Israelis to cling to the Lord.
Obedience is not a legalism it is the trust in the faithful God

remembering God's past work feels perseverance in the present and hope for the future.
How ironic it is that even after experiencing countless acts of God's deliverance when a new challenges appears our hearts are open tempted to look everywhere except to the Lord who has been faithful all along.
Joshua reminds us that the seasons of arrest are not a signal to the relax our face but on invitation to remember who truly felt for us.

A Prayer of Trust and Dependence

When our trust begins to drift the right response is not fear of or self reliance but repentance and returning our hearts to the Lord who has been who never failed us and holding fast you know to him once again let's brow down dear Father thank you for what you have done in our lives we experienced in a peace today.
