Light Has Come (Isaiah 9:1-7) Living Life 12/23/2025 Daily Devotional Bible Study
Studying prophecy is always a challenge.
The biggest reason is because prophecy is difficult to be able to understand if it's talking about something that's immediate or if it's talking about something that's way in the future if from our perspective it's talking about something that's already passed or if it's talking about something that's yet to come and in that I I really as my church struggled with prophecy as I struggled with prophecy
meditate upon this and God I think has really given me five keys to help me understand prophecy and these are the keys that I want to share with you.
Key number one life is hard.
Key number two it's going to get worse.
Key number three God is in control.
Key number four God will make it work out and key number five so our responsibility is to hang on until God fulfills all promises.
When we understand those five keys we know how to not only be able to interpret prophecy but to be able to use it to apply.
Because once we understand say that this prophecy is talking about how it's life is going to get worse then we know I need to endure.
If this prophecy is talking about how God is going to make things work out then we can wait for that time in which God will fix and redeem all things.
And we always know that our response to prophecy is to hang on until the time by which God has fulfilled all prophecy.
So that allows us to be able to ask a question that Isaiah answers and the question is this How can God bring hope in the midst of our own despair?
All of us struggle All of us know that life is hard and things will get worse but God does offer us hope.
So how can we be able to find that hope amidst our own despair?
Well let's read Isaah chapter nine verses one through seven in order to find God's answer.

Isaiah Chapter 9, verses 1 to seven.
Nevertheless there will be no more gloom for those who were in distress.
In the past he humbled the land of Zebulin and the land of Naftili but in the future he will honor Galilee of the nations by the way of the sea beyond the Jordan The people walking in darkness have seen a great light on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned you have enlarged the nation and increased their joy.
They rejoice before you as people rejoice at the harvest as warriors rejoice when dividing the plunder for as in the day of Middian's defeat you have shattered the yoke that burdens them the bar across their shoulders the red of their oppressor every warrior's boot used in battle and every garment rolled in blood will be destined for burning will be fuel for the fire
for to us a child is born to us a son is given and the government will be on his shoulders and he will be called wonderful counselor Mighty God, everlasting father prince of peace of the greatness of his government and peace there will be no end.
He will reign on David's throne and over his kingdom establishing and upholding it with justice and righteousness from that time on and forever the zeal of the Lord Almighty will accomplish.
So how can God bring hope amidst our own despair?
The answer is he sends someone to change our war into something wholesome into his own kingdom.
Let's take a look at how we get that.
See in verse 1 of this prophecy it already indicates to us that life is bad.
A verse one says that because there is gloom and hardship to her meaning in Israel that there are already problems there are already difficulties that are happening
but remember God is in control.
The people the ones who proceede to be in darkness have seen a great light and that light is dwelling.
This is in verse two so often that's interpreted as reflecting upon the star that was going to point to Jesus's birth but it's also God himself who is that great light that's dwelling amongst us and providing us with hope he will help make it work out.
This is verse 3 You have caused to multiply the gladness.
So even though there are struggles in gloom
even though in this prophecy of Isao where he's looking at the war that's happening Assyria is going to be coming in and wiping out all the nations of the north and Judah itself is going to be faced with near annihilation.
It says that you God has multiplied our gladness and therefore since he will make it work out oppression will end.
This is verse four because the yoke of burden with a rod of his shoulder you have caused the dismay as of the day of Middian.
In other words that
God will give to someone a power authority a rod as if to rule and then that will change the result.
When it refers to the days of Median it's talking about what is happening in the book of Judges in the days of Guidean when Guidean had only 300 people 100 on every sort of triangular side of this Median encampment by which God said there were more people than you could count the moment the 300 torches
were a blaze and Guidean had everyone cry out a sword for the Lord and for Guidean those medianites in their camp freaked out so much that they all started to stab each other to get away from the lights that were coming in on the camp and everybody wiped each other out.
So God in this prophecy is saying that same type of reaction is going to happen.
God will cause a confusion to destroy the armies that are opposed to the Lord so that God's people will be free.
And the ending of the war this is in verse six the the boots and the mantle that is supposed to be rolled in blood that they're they're going to be useless they're going to be fuel for burning because there's no more war all of it is over this is in verse five and you will be given a savior.
This is the most important part.
This is the prophecy relevant to us verse six because a child is born
a son that will be given to us and the rulership will be upon his shoulder and his name will be called Counselor.
That is wonderful mighty God forever father and Prince of piece for astronomically important titles given to our God.
Now given to the child that God promised the child that we know as the person of the Lord Jesus Christ and this will allow abundance of rule that according to verse seven that this child will sit upon the throne of David and that throne will never end.
It will be an eternal kingdom by which David's rule kind of ended because of the disobedience of the people.
This kingdom will have no end because it will be filled with obedience, submission to God proper ruler, rulership of his authority upon the nation and we will be a people destined to rule underneath him as promised in this prophecy.
You see this is hope
hope in the midst of despair hope in the midst of being conquered by a nation that God says I will send to you a child that will bear my titles Hope that is kind of like the hope was that was offered in The Ride of Rohereum in the third book of JRR.
Tolkin's Lord of the Rings.
See I love how the book did it.
The movie did an okay job in this but the book was so much better.
You see they were standing at the gates that had never been entered at Menus Tyreth
and yet the orcs had brought with them this battering RAM that had never been defeated in battle either so two opposing forces that had never lost and yet this wolf's head this battering RAM crashed through the gates and the Nasgul landed right in front of those gates.
It seemed that Ministerth would finally be broken would finally be invaded.
When Gandolph stood there upon his horse Shadowfx looked upon the Nasgul and said to him you have bigger problems to deal with than me today.
Just at that moment a light shined the light of dawn and the Rohherum began to sound their horn to start their charge to liberate Menusyereth.
That's our God at our darkest hour where the breaking upon the gates will utterly destroy us we're completely surrounded.
It seems as if we had no hope yet God's light shines and God's child is born.
Who truly is our wonderful counselor who is our mighty God who is our everlasting father
and who is that Prince of Peace that allows us to be able to have peace forevermore upon this Earth Now you might say but Jesus He already came and yet not all of this prophecy is fulfilled.
And the answer is because this is the challenge of prophecy.
Not all prophecies are often fulfilled at once.
Jesus fulfilled part of it.
He came he is the wonderful counselor, the mighty God, the Prince of Peace
but yet he's going to come again to establish that kingdom that has no end a kingdom that you and I can be a part of so we can find hope in the midst of our own despair because that's our God who often gives us that light at the ninth hour, our darkest hour yet with the dawn of his light comes eternal hope and we will one day have that kingdom that knows no end.
May we this
holiday season, not only celebrate our great God and what he has done for us but know that his hope comes in his perfect time

So today I ask us all to pray for that fifth key of prophecy for ourselves that we will be able to endure until the day where God's final prophecy is fulfilled and we have that eternal kingdom that knows no end.
Let us pray Lord we often struggle because of our own despair.
We see maybe physical problems, or spiritual problems, or family problems, or work problems and we struggle in despair because we wonder when is it that you're going to come?
So Lord, we pray we pray that we can endure until the end that we can be able to be fully equipped until that day where you have an eternal kingdom that knows no end Help us to hang on until all your prophecies are fulfilled and we can trust in you.
Oh God who is our wonderful counselor our mighty God our eternal Father and ultimately, our prince of fulness, wholeness, wellness, our prince of Chalom, of peace.
So until that day comes where you reign perfectly may we be faithful in Jesus name we pray amen.
