Introduction: A Promised Inheritance in a Difficult Land

Merry Christmas

Jesus is indeed the reason for this sacred season and truly the greatest Christmas gift isn't it?
The gift of salvation a gift freely given to us yet immeasurably costly to our lord.
It is therefore fitting that we celebrate regardless of our circumstances.
As I was reading today's passage I found the list of towns and villages quite a mouthful.
And what are all these places and why are they significant?
One thing is clear though

the territory allotted to the tribe of Benjamin was mountainous and difficult to conquer yet another truth stands out just as plainly.
They received their inheritance exactly as promised first through Moses and later confirmed by Joshua and eventually the Bengamites would rise to become formidable warriors.
With these thoughts in mind let us turn today's scripture

Scripture Reading: Joshua 18:11–28

Joshua Chapter 18 verses 11 to 28

the first lot came up for the tribe of Benjamin according to its clans their allotted territory lay between the tribes of Judah and Joseph on the north side.
Their boundary began at the Jordan, passed the northern slope of Jericho and headed west into the hill country coming out at the wilderness of Beth Aven.
From there it crossed to the south slope of Lus that is Bethel and went down to Ataroth Adar on the hill south of lower Beth Horon

from the hill facing Beth Horon on the south the boundary turned south along the western side and came out at Kirath Bail that is Krieth Jiram a town of the people of Judah.
This was the western side.
The southern side began at the outskirts of Kurath Girum on the west and the boundary came out at the spring of the waters of Neftoa.
The boundary went down to the foot of the hill facing the valley of Ben Hmman north of the valley of Refaim.

It continued down the Henham valley along the southern slope of the Jebbissite city and so to N.
Rogell. It then curved north went to Enhamesh, continued to Gell Loth which faces the pass of Adumum and ran down to the stone of Bohan son of Ruben.
It continued to the northern slopes of Beth Araba and on down into the Araba.
It then went to the northern slope of Beth Hagla and came out at the northern bay of the Dad Sea at the mouth of the Jordan.
In the south this was the southern boundary.

The Jordan formed the boundary on the eastern side.
These were the boundaries that marked out the inheritance of the clans of Benjamin on all sides.
The tribe of Benjamin according to its clans had the following towns.
Jericho Beth Hogla Emmac Kezz Beth Araba Zimmeram Bethel Avum para Ofra Cafar Moni Offney and GABA 12 towns in their villages Gibiion Rama Birath Mispa Kefera Mosa Reckum Earpel Tarla Zealah half the Jebucite city that is Jerusalem Gibia and Kirath 14 towns and their villages.

This was the inheritance of Benjamin for its clans.

Salvation Given, Sanctification Fought For

As we briefly mentioned yesterday salvation is God's free gift to us.
However sanctification requires perseverance, suffering and spiritual battle and it is granted only to those willing to walk the path that Christ sets before them.
Being welcomed into the family of God is merely the beginning.
A long and meaningful journey lies ahead

as John Bunyan's pilgrim's progress so vividly portrays those who are saved are also invited to participate in God's redemptive work to bring his love justice and peace into the world.
Along the way we are also invited to be shaped into Christ's likeness.
Salvation and sanctification cannot be separated.
There are two inseparable parts of the one gift Christ has given.

Thus for the glory of God and for the eternal reward he has prepared for his children we must engage the spiritual battles before us and faithfully conquer the territory he assigns.

A Personal Testimony of God’s Faithfulness

When I received Christ during my college years the word of God came to me with unusual clarity and power.
It was from Acts sixteen thirty one Believe in the Lord Jesus and you will be saved you and your household.
For the reasons I cannot fully explain this verse struck me so deeply.

Even now I vividly recall the moment I pondered it while reading the book of Acts I sensed unmistakably that the Lord was speaking about my own family My father mother brother and sister most of whom were at that time committed Buddhists Confucianists or at best religious synchrtists.
Knowing that their strong personalities I could not imagine how they would ever come to Christ.
Nevertheless from that day forward I began interceding for each one of them with earnest prayers.

Years passed three years five years seven years and nothing happened.
In fact things seemed to grow worse.
My family became increasingly hostile toward Christianity and toward my pursuit of seminary studies and church ministry.
I continued to fight the good fight but by the tenth year I grew weary and doubtful Would God really save my family?
Is there any hope for them?
And there were moments when I wanted to give up yet the Holy spirit would not allow me to cease praying for them

Fifteen years past then seventeen then twenty years in the process My mother came to Christ My brother came to Christ as well but my father remained unmoved until last year when he too returned to the Lord.
I now carry this testimony as one more leaving evidence that God keeps his promises.
He is indeed a faithful covenant keeper.

From the Youngest Son to Fearless Warriors

Returning to the story of the Benjamin in today's passage when we think of Benjamin the youngest son of Jacob we often picture a tender sheltered child especially after Joseph was lost.
You recall how Joseph honored him with five times the portion at the banquet in Egypt.
It is easy to imagine Benjamin as a gentle fragile prince yet Jacob's blessing paints a very different portrait.

Benjamin is a ravenous wolf in the morning he devours the prey and in the evening he divides the spoil according to Genesis 49 27 It is a surprising description seemingly inconsistent with our image of Benjamin but at some point in Israel's history he and his descendants indeed became fearless warriors.

Courage Formed Through Obedience and Struggle

When did this transformation occur?
I believe it was through the very experiences described in today's passage when they found themselves compelled to fight for their God given inheritance despite formidable obstacles along with four other tribes they initially hesitated because all they could see were the towering mountains, the intimidating giants and the lack of support from neighboring tribes.

But when Joshua redirected their gaze to the God who had sustained them and secured their victories they found courage and press forward.
If you find yourself caught between difficult circumstances even though you have faithfully followed God prayed earnestly and waited for his intervention and it seems that his promises are slow and coming.
Let today's passage serve as a reminder strengthening your heart.
God is faithful his word never returns void his working behind the scenes to reshape,

shape and reshape the warrior within you to prepare you to receive his promises and to make you a channel of blessing to others.
So let us give thanks and let us once more entrust ourselves to him pressing on with faith and prayer.
So let's pray

Closing Prayer: Trusting the Faithful Covenant Keeper

Heavenly Father at times we find ourselves facing difficult and even unfair circumstances especially when others seem to have an easier path yet replace our trust in you once more your word declares that you are loving, faithful and that your weights are higher.
Cover us with your holy spirit and strengthen us through your word until we witness the full unfolding of your promises in our lives.

May we live for your glory and partake in the glorious inheritance awaiting us in Heaven in the name of our Lord the guarantee of the Covenant Promise We pray Amen.
