Introduction: An Unexpected Lesson from the Basketball Court

Welcome to living life.

I am a big sports fan and I love playing basketball especially these days as you can tell I'm not playing too much but back in the day I played a lot when I was younger and we would play at the park five on five so five people against five people and how you would play the next game is um you pick your next five and so whoever is ready whoever is walking to the park walking to the courts at that time and inside I remember thinking I hope

you know some big guys, strong guys fast guys come so that we could beat that next team.
And I remember part of my next team it was this older gentleman he was shorter he didn't look that fast he looked like a dad and I'm like man we lost and but you know I'm here let's exercise at least and so we're playing and this older gentleman was actually an amazing basketball player.
He was like giving me amazing passes he was shooting it well

and we eventually won and I realized don't judge a book by its cover.
In our passage today God promises a king who would come to reign and back in Zakaria's time kings would come majestically and gloriously on these horses and and show their power and show their leadership.
But the king God promises is riding in on a baby donkey.

And if we've been in church and we believe in the Lord I'm pretty sure you know this is speaking about Jesus.

Overview: The Humble King and His Reign

And so today in today's passage we're going to see how Jesus would come but also how he will reign in the future and save us and lead us in our lives.

So let's read today's passage together

The Coming of King
The Coming of King

Scripture Reading: Zechariah 9:9–17

Zachariah Chapter nine verses nine to seventeen

Rejoice greatly Daughter Zion South Daughter Jerusalem See your king come to you righteous and victorious lowly and riding on a donkey on a coat the fold of a donkey.
I will take away the chariots from Ephram and the war horses from Jerusalem and the battle bow will be broken.
He will proclaim peace to the nations.
His rule will extend from sea to Sat and from the river to the ends of the Earth.

As for you because of the blood of my covenant with you I will free your prisoners from the waterless pit return to your fortress You prisoners of hope Even now I announced that I will restore twice as much to you.
I will bend Judah as I bend my bow and fill it with Eprium.
I will rouse your son's Zion against your son's greece and make you like a warrior's sword.

Then the Lord will appear over them his arrow will flash like lightning The sovereign Lord will sound the trumpet He will march in the storms of the south and the Lord Almighty will shield them.
They will destroy and overcome with sling stones they will drink and roar as with wind they will be full like a bowl used for sprinkling the corners of the altar.
The Lord their God will save his people.
On that day as a shepherd saves his flock

they will sparkle in his land like jewels in a crown how attractive and beautiful they will be.
Grain will make the young men thrive and mu wine the young women.

The Humility of the King

So today we see that God promises a king to save but this king is a very humble king because he rides on a into town on a baby donkey and once again we know this as Jesus a prophecy of how Jesus would come.
Why would Jesus ride in on this baby donkey to show his humility?
Part of why he shows that is because his humility It relates to us.
Imagine if he came in just like any other king he is the king of kings even the presidents and the kings in this Earth Can we relate to them?

Can we talk to them? Can we confide in them?
Can we have a relationship with them?
No but for the king of kings How could we even possibly get near to him?
No but Jesus came near to us humbly came to us in a manger.
He came and he helped those who were outcast and shunned and that is who he is.
And so praise be to God that we could relate to Jesus as our savior but also he showed humility in submitting to the will of God fully submitting to the will of God

Lesson: True Humility as Submission

that is what humility is for us.
We're like wild horses wild horses have so much potential ah to be used in war to use UM to travel long distances gloriously being taken care of by Is master But that is only if we submit to the master if we just live as wild horses we just graze around and we don't get nothing done we have no future we just live and die.
And so it's very important for us to understand the importance of humility of submitting to God submitting to him as our master

and understanding the amazing blessings and just how much God can use us in a powerful way if only we submit to him.
And so that's what Jesus is showing us.
First his humility when Jesus comes in verse ten it shows that he will bring peace that there will be no more wars but also in verse 11 to those who are in exile by the blood of the Covenant they will be set free.
And so once again showing that by the blood of Jesus

that we are saved and we are set free from our sin and so praise be to God for the precious sacrifice of Jesus.

The Victory and Power of the Lord

And then we read verse thirteen together Can we read verse thirteen ready?
Begin I will bend Judah as I bend my ball and fill it with Ephrame I will rouse your son's Zion against your son's Greece and make you like a warrior's sword Amen This is showing us that when Jesus comes and that God would raise up his people to do his powerful work that Greece represents

the things of this world the principalities the God godlessness of this world and that God would raise up his people to combat this and to get rid of it in Jesus's name

we see in Sixteen and seventeen we see that God shields his people God saves his people

and just the immense blessings that we have

because he is our shield

because he saves us what a blessing we have in him.

How does His rule over our lives also bear testimony to His humility?

The Joy and Blessing of His People

We finished with verse seventeen.
Let's read verse seventeen together how attractive and beautiful they will be.
Green will make the young men thrive and new wine the young women Amen This verse is showing us the blessings we have in Christ Jesus In your heart Do you feel an abundance of joy?
Do you feel abundance of happiness and thanksgiving?
If you do not that means we're not enjoying the relationship and the

plentiful joy that we could have in Jesus.
It's not about the material possessions we have it's not about how well things are working out in our workplace and in our relationships and all that.
The most important thing is how is your relationship with Christ if it is strong if you are walking in faith if you are experiencing his presence then like these verse say there is immense blessing, overflowing blessing for us as his children.
So brother and sisters I, want to encourage you that this king

Conclusion: The King Who Will Return in Glory

who will reign, who will bring peace, who will set us free has already come and he is of course, our saviour Jesus but also let's be reminded he will come again and he will finish what he started he will finish and bring the final victory for us.
And so let's put our full trust in him for he is with us in us and he will come back soon.
Let us pray Heavenly Father we thank you that

have a king who reins in humility who reigns with peace who reins to save us and protect us and who promises us eternal blessings bountiful blessings not just in heaven but even here on Earth that we could experience those things because Jesus you are with us and so help us to not try to trust in the kings of this world or people around us or for us to be in that seat but help us to put our full trust in our eternal King Christ Jesus

who lived, who died but who rose again and proved that he is who he says he is Help us to put our trust in him in Jesus name We pray Amen.
